Sydney Academy of Sport and Recreation É«ÀÇÉçÇømembers met on Friday 14 October and voted to hold a 24-hour stop work and let the Baird Government know that the privatisation of Sport and Recreation centres was not in the best interests of the staff, the diverse clientele you care for, and the general public of NSW.
The resolution passed at the meeting reads:
That this meeting of É«ÀÇÉçÇømembers condemns the proposed secret sell off of the Sport & Recreation Centres by the Baird Government. Sport & Recreation offer active experiences and outdoor education programs to advantage families, schools, corporations and the wider community. The public provision of these centres ensure that Sport and Recreation is available for everyone, with increased opportunities for people with disabilities, women, seniors, youth at risk and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
This meeting supports the É«ÀÇÉçÇøin all its efforts to preserve this valuable public institution.
The NSW Government must immediately cease its privatisation agenda.
In addition, this meeting endorses to stop work on Wednesday 26th October for 24 hours to save our Sport & Recreation Centres.
Please note that the motion and 24-hour stop work only applies to É«ÀÇÉçÇømembers at the Sydney Academy of Sport and Recreation (Narrabeen).
Following this members meeting, Minister for Sport, Stuart Ayres, called a meeting with the É«ÀÇÉçÇøset for Wednesday 19 October. The É«ÀÇÉçÇøwrote to Minister Ayres in August, and only received a response once members voted to take strike action. The solidarity and strength show by É«ÀÇÉçÇømembers during this difficult time has been inspiring.
The É«ÀÇÉçÇøwill be holding a further members meeting at the Sydney Academy of Sport and Recreation Centre on Friday 21 October to share the results of the meeting with Minister Ayres and discuss its effect, if any, on the resolution passed by the members.
