CHILD case workers have walked off the job protesting staff shortages they say endanger lives.

Department of Family and Community Services (FACS) social workers from offices in Tamworth, Armidale, Glen Innes, Narrabri and Inverell stopped work for one hour yesterday as part of a state-wide day of action on the issue organised by the Public Service Association (PSA).

色狼社区regional spokesman Steve Meares said the striking workers were demanding to know why Community Services Minister Pru Goward continued to starve their department.

鈥淪taff are protesting over the minister鈥檚 lack of response to their questions on staffing numbers,鈥 he said.

鈥淪he鈥檚 said there鈥檚 no shortfall, the numbers are good … and we know that she鈥檚 budgeted for 2100 positions, but just barely over 1800 are actually filled.

鈥淐ertainly that鈥檚 not what she鈥檚 been telling the media or the general public.鈥

Ms Goward has consistently claimed there are more than 2000 case workers, but reports last week revealed NSW was short about 270.

That meant about 2500 children weren鈥檛 being monitored, Mr Meares said.

鈥淭hey鈥檙e still saying only one in four children are being seen, so we鈥檙e a long way off even a minimum requirement for protecting children,鈥 he said.

鈥淧ru said, 鈥榳ell, to see all the kids we鈥檇 need an army鈥. Well, put one on.

鈥淲e鈥檙e talking about really vulnerable people here. You don鈥檛 get classified at risk of serious harm for no reason,鈥 he said.

Increased pressure on remaining case workers is compounding the issue, with one-third of claims for workers鈥 compensation by FACS staff the result of psychological damage.

鈥淚鈥檝e got a number of staff across the region that are really stressed, they鈥檙e hanging on by the skin of their teeth to their positions,鈥 Mr Meares said.

鈥淧eople are getting disciplined; there are performance management issues now because they can鈥檛 keep up with the workloads they鈥檙e given.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a vicious cycle; we鈥檙e losing more staff than they鈥檙e employing.鈥

It鈥檚 the second time in less than a month case workers in Tamworth have staged walkouts. 聽Mr Meares said they would continue their industrial campaign until they learned the truth about the number of vacancies, but didn鈥檛 say what form future action would take.
