TRASHING OUR TAFE: NSW GOVERNMENT鈥橲 WOEFUL RECORD ON NATIONAL TAFE DAY

TRASHING OUR TAFE: NSW GOVERNMENT鈥橲 WOEFUL RECORD ON NATIONAL TAFE DAY

  11 August 2021

Since the election of the O鈥橣arrell LNP Government in 2011 more than 5000 teaching and support jobs have been axed from TAFE NSW, including 779 support roles in the last twelve months, with plans already underway to shed more jobs in Information Services, Marketing and Executive branches.

At the same time as designating TAFE an 鈥渆ssential service鈥 and leaving campuses open across the state – including campuses in hotpot LGAs – the NSW Government plans to push ahead with further job cuts while the broader NSW economy continues to struggle with the impact of an extended lockdown and an unprecedented public health crisis.

Hundreds of TAFE courses have been slashed too, meaning regional students can鈥檛 study locally and community businesses find it increasingly difficult to attract qualified trades people and job ready professionals.

The sale of the Scone campus earlier this year is just the latest move by the NSW Government to sell off critical TAFE assets from a list of 27 targeted sites, with a spokesperson for the Treasurer, Dominic Perrottet, confirming as much after a leaked cabinet document made it鈥檚 way into the media today.

NSW needs a government ready to rebuild TAFE and future proof our economy by training the workforce of tomorrow and meet the challenges of globalisation and climate change. NSW deserves better. We need investment, not cuts.
