Stop the closure: Sign our petition to save Goulburn Gaol

  5 May 2026

The NSW Government has announced plans to close almost half of historic Goulburn Gaol, resulting in the loss of more than 130 public sector jobs from the community.  This will affect schools, hospitals and other public sector jobs as well as harm the local economy and small businesses.
A petition has been created that asks:
  1. Put an immediate halt to plans to close parts of the Goulburn Correctional Centre Old Gaol in September 2026
  2. Engage in meaningful , broad  consultation with all staff, the local community, Local MP and Council in relation to the proposal
  3. Release all data and justification underpinning the decision to consider the proposed closure
  4. Give a commitment to ongoing transparent, evidence-based decision making in relation to this matter
  5. Provide publicly accessible reports on the alternatives to closure of the Old Gaol wings – including – but not limited to- building new facilities on the site, renovation of the old wing facilities progressively and continuing to operate as a gaol, repurposing the buildings as a remand centre or domestic violence centre, repurposing the buildings as a training centre or administration centre for NSW Corrective Services
  6. Protect all jobs currently allocated to the Goulburn Gaol, and security for all affected staff – including no forced redundancies or relocations
  7. Keep the Centre fully operational during any consultation period, with no loss of capacity or services
  8. Give a commitment to fair and equitable support to regional and rural communities in regard to maintaining current facilities – such as our 142 year old Gaol operation
  9. Recognise the economic impact of such a decision on a regional city – including community employment, small business, community voluntary organisations, and schools.

If the petition reaches 20,000 signatures parliament must consider it.
