In the wake of concerns raised after the tragic events of 2 October 2015, the É«ÀÇÉçÇøcontinues to advocate for measures to improve your safety and well-being as employees working for NSW Police. Previous actions are detailed in our bulletin HERE
Police Headquarters
We received valuable feedback from our members at meetings held last month, and conveyed your concerns to management about existing security measures and suggested improvements. On 23 November, the É«ÀÇÉçÇøattended the NSW Police Health & Safety Consultative meeting and raised your concerns, including:
- Scene of Crime Officers (SOCOs)
Safety for our SOCO members and the risks posed when working in the field was raised, including the possibility of changes to current uniform. The É«ÀÇÉçÇøwill consult with SOCO members about the changes you may like to have made. Please provide any feedback to your workplace delegates.
- Situational Awareness training
The É«ÀÇÉçÇøis aware this training has been offered to civilian staff at one metropolitan Command. The É«ÀÇÉçÇøhas requested NSW Police consider facilitating situational awareness training for all civilian staff, prioritising those working at NSW Police Headquarters and further discussions regarding this are scheduled for 22 December.
- Special Constables
The É«ÀÇÉçÇøagain argued the ‘Active Armed Offender Training’ provided to Police Officers should be extended to Special Constables. Your union will seek an update next week from the Commander, Workforce Safety, on the progress of this issue.
- Consultation
The É«ÀÇÉçÇøhas stressed the need for consultation with staff about proposed structural changes flagged for NSW Police Headquarters and the Sydney Police Centre.
- Work health & safety structures
Our members are largely unaware of the structures that exist for raising health and safety concerns and for being consulted about any proposed changes. The É«ÀÇÉçÇøwill work with NSW Police to publicise and improve those structures.
The É«ÀÇÉçÇøwill report back in the new year and update members about the outcomes from our meeting with the Workforce Safety Commander.
