NSW Education Temporary Workforce Transition initiative

  3 March 2023

On Tuesday, 28 February 2023 the department sent a Bulletin to all principals, District Educational Leaders and School Performance Executive Directors regarding the 2023 Temporary Workforce Transition (TWT) initiative.

It is proposed that around 15,000 temporary teaching and support staff will be eligible to transition to permanent employment this year.

School staff will shortly have access to the details of the eligibility criteria for permanency and how the process will operate over the next 12 months.

The É«ÀÇÉçÇøhas reviewed the current draft criteria and determined that there are still too many deficiencies in the current draft proposal.

The É«ÀÇÉçÇøhas written to the Education Secretary requesting an urgent meeting to address outstanding concerns of É«ÀÇÉçÇøSchools delegates and that agreement be reached on a final proposal. You can read the letter HERE.

The É«ÀÇÉçÇøconsiders that members who have three years’ long-term-temporary continuous employment with the Department should be eligible for permanency. Your union also insists there be a review/appeals process for members with É«ÀÇÉçÇøparticipation in dealing with individual members’ grievances around being deemed ineligible for permanent appointment. The É«ÀÇÉçÇøalso does not support individual schools having to fund these positions, which will be in addition to and above a school’s current staffing entitlement. The Department has made it clear this a one-off (political) process and current staffing and recruitment agreements and policies will operate concurrently with the TWT initiative.

The É«ÀÇÉçÇøhas requested a pause in the proposed TWT initiative timeline in order to resolve these outstanding concerns.
