The É«ÀÇÉçÇøis continuing its campaign to separate dangerous, radicalised young offenders from the general population in Juvenile Justice.
As a result of the campaign so far, Justice Minister David Elliott has announced early plans for an Enhanced Support Unit.
É«ÀÇÉçÇømembers in Juvenile Justice have been subjected to repeated violent acts from inmates, as well as threats, including beheading. Regardless of which party holds power after the election, the É«ÀÇÉçÇøwill be demanding a stand-alone secure unit for high-risk offenders.
The project team has now completed visiting all centres and conducting workshops with a wide range of staff participating and providing valuable information. The project team will now prepare a report to submit to the Working Group to discuss at the next meeting set for Thursday, 28 March 2019.
The next step in this process is for the Department to have a submission of their proposal on the desk of the Minister by mid-April. At this stage, we do not know who that Minister will be, but the É«ÀÇÉçÇøis committed to continue to put pressure on the Government to support the Department in providing the resources necessary to ensure the safety of its staff.
The É«ÀÇÉçÇøcontinues to maintain its position that the best option to managing safety within Juvenile Justice Centres and to provide a safe and secure environment for staff and others is an Enhanced Support Unit (ESU).
