Dear ɫ������members at Moss Vale Public School

The ɫ������visited Moss Vale Public School on the 29th October 2019 to discuss your new workplace conditions including the new Award: Crown Employees (School Administrative and Support Staff) Award 2019.

The following points were discussed and further clarification is provided below.

Allowances

There are three allowances for SASS – First Aid, Medications and Health Care Procedures that SAS staff may be required to undertake. The Department of Education’s policy is that to perform any of these duties, one MUST be trained and are also entitled to be paid the allowance. If you are not trained or being paid the allowance, the staff member may risk being held responsible if something goes wrong while performing these duties. SASS have the right to refuse performing these duties if they have not been trained or have been refused the allowance.

If there is the need for further allowances, the Principal can ask for more from the Department. They can also choose to pay for the allowances out of school funds. It’s up to Principal to manage the situation to ensure that only SAS staff who are trained and are receiving the allowance are performing additional duties.

All three allowances will be incorporated into the hourly rate of the new classification of “SLSO – Student Health Support.

This is all clearly stated in Section 5.10 of the Award:

5.10.1. A first aid allowance as set out in Table 1 of Schedule 2, Part B is payable to approved employees holding a current St John Ambulance First Aid Certificate or its equivalent for undertaking first-aid duties in accordance with the employee’s statement of duties.

5.10.2. An administration of medications allowance as set out in Table 1 of Schedule 2, Part B is payable to employees required to administer medications upon completion of appropriate training.  The allowance is paid only on days worked.

5.10.3. A health support allowance as set out in Table 1 of Schedule 2, Part B is payable to School Learning Support Officers required to perform health support for students upon completion of appropriate training. The allowance is paid only on days worked.

Performance Developments Plans

PDPs are to be focused on career development and growth and not be used in a punitive way. These should be done in work time with your supervisor. Goals are to be negotiated not directed.

Paid morning tea break

Section 9.2 of the Award states “employees who work more than two hours from the commencement of the school day shall be entitled to a paid morning tea break of 10 minutes each day.”
