Casual Keeper progression
1 March 2021
At the February Joint Consultative Committee (JCC) meeting with Taronga management, the É«ÀÇÉçÇøraised an issue affecting casual Keeper and their potential underpayment.
The É«ÀÇÉçÇøunderstands there are large a number of casuals who have been paid as a Trainee Keeper Level 1, even though they have the experience and qualifications to be paid as a Keeper Level 1. The difference in remuneration between the two is significant, and the É«ÀÇÉçÇøbelieves members who are clearly performing work at a higher level than Trainee Keeper 1 should be paid at a level commensurate with that work. We also believe long-term casuals should be converted to permanent employment so that they can progress and be recognised for the greater levels of responsibility that they undertake for the Zoo.
The É«ÀÇÉçÇøwould like to hear from any long-term casuals who have not progressed past the Trainee Keeper Level 1. We’d also like to hear from anyone who has progressed when given a contract, yet have been demoted when placed on the casual list.
The É«ÀÇÉçÇøwill be holding a É«ÀÇÉçÇømembers’ meeting at the Hort workshop on Wednesday 3 March at 12:30pm. We strongly encourage any affected members to attend. Alternatively, if you are unable to attend at this time please contact your É«ÀÇÉçÇøIndustrial Officer Michael Sinclair at . Â
