Bad Report for School Software – Daily Telegraph 05/07/2019

  5 July 2019

END of financial year reports for the state鈥檚 2206 public schools could be inaccurate because of glitches in the software being used, according to the union that represents school administration staff.

The union yesterday revealed it was considering industrial action over the issue.

In a letter to its members, the Public Service Association said it was 鈥渟trongly considering all available options鈥 if the system was not fixed.

鈥淐onsequently, our delegates expressed concern and questioned the department regarding the inaccuracy of reporting and end-of-financial year position in schools,鈥 the letter said.

General secretary Stewart Little told The Daily Telegraph : 鈥淧rincipals, as the school manager, under this new system do not know how much money the school has to spend on education-related activities .鈥

Frustration with the glitches boiled over in May with the union ordering members not to use the system until the glitches were fixed. But the ban on using the software was ruled unlawful by the Industrial Relations Commission.

An Education Department spokesman said the system was introduced this year to improve budget management in schools and said 鈥渕inor technical issues鈥 had already been addressed. 鈥淲BSIO functions do not relate to the payment of teacher wages, and the system is not the basis of school annual reporting,鈥 he said.
